Detailed Information

JoJo Shifflett was an Indian Law attorney for the late Dennis J. Banks, co-founder of AIM (The American Indian Movement). Her experience includes:

  • Indian water law
  • Indian irrigation projects
  • Federal recognition process under the Indian Reorganization Act
  • Radio broadcast legal correspondent and storyteller

She is also the author of Tales Told by an Indian Half-breed and A Lumbee Gershom, two entertaining books of nonfiction native stories. Each story teaches an Indian ritual or tradition that is currently being forgotten. JoJo writes for the benefit of the next seven generations, including her son, nieces and nephews.

One day they will feel a pull back to the old ways of our ancestors. When our young Lumbee and Tuscarora feel that tugging to return to the old ways, they will have these books and mini documentaries to turn to for guidance“.

JoJo speaks at public and private schools about her experiences as an Indigenous woman who was forced to attend school 400 miles away from the Lumbee Tribe.
